Sheldon Cooper's Acceptance Speech

The Big Bang Theory is one of my favorite shows. This character, Sheldon Cooper, is usually the serious, intellectual guy that has trouble "letting loose". This is a speech he had to make among colleagues for an award that he was receiving in science.

Ethos - Sheldon is a well-known scientist that has made many significant advances in his field of study as an theoretical physicist. His audience is gathered specifically because he is receiving an award, so they will be naturally inclined to listen to him to a degree. He also addresses the audience in a personal manner throughout his speech. He maintains good eye contact, scanning his audience throughout his speech. He has poor posture sometimes, but it isn't noticeable because he seems to have control of the stage. He is confident, so there are no awkward pauses and his hand gestures seem pretty normal. His speech is also relatively relatable to his audience because of their prior knowledge of science.

Pathos - Sheldon appeals to the emotions of his audience through humor, confusion and his tone of voice.

Logos - Sheldon appeals to logic by his "demonstration" of the 4th-demension. He also uses many scientific references and tells jokes relating to his topic.

Even though Ethos, Pathos and Logos are present in his speech, Sheldon did not present a good speech. His audience was too busy thinking, "What the hell?" to laugh at his jokes or appreciate the science references. This is because all of the prior "ethos" or credibility that he had established, was discarded due to the fact that he was drunk. Overall, he made a fool of himself. If there's anything redeeming about this joke of a speech, it's not one that will be easily forgotten.

Response to "Rise of the NBA Nerd: Basketball Style and Black Identity"

After reading Rise of the NBA Nerd: Basketball Style and Black Culture, I am left wondering - what was the point of this article? I believe that one point was to emphasize transformation in African American culture. However, I do not see how this very small percentage of the African American society could possibly represent the culture as a whole. Also, it is not just the African American basketball players that are dressing as nerds and adapting to this new "hipster" fad. The nerd look has become very popular in the young adult community as a whole - not more or less in any one race. Here are just a few examples of the "nerd" style among different races:

White/perhaps Italian?

African American

White

Asian

So you see, I do not believe that the NBA nerd situation is really a racial issue. However, it is an adequate representation of a generational "character trait"if you will. I think that this transformation from nerdy bully-victim style into something that's cool and unique expresses a certain quality about my generation. It breaks down stereo-types and strives to allow people to express themselves however they want to. Granted, this style is hardly promoting "individuality" because it has become so popular. But honestly, I think the NBA stars are just going along with new trends and styles. Let's think logically here... What human being doesn't look good in a well-fitting button up and a fashionable bow tie complete with appropriate accessories? No one. Anyone looks better in a bow tie. So why does this need to become an article, much less an argument? It doesn't.

Welcome To My Blog!

Hi! My name is Anna Ward. I am 18 years old and I am currently a freshman pursuing my Bachelor's in Nursing at the University of Kentucky. This blog is for my WRD 111 class in the Spring of 2013.

Quick facts about me:
*I went to a boarding high school in Lillooet, British Columbia, Canada for two of my four years in high school. My school, Fountainview Academy, is a Christian school known worldwide for it's orchestra and choir, as well as DVD productions involving the music program. It is also home to British Columbia's largest organic carrot farm - which I happened to have the privilege of working on for the duration of my 2-year stay in Canada.
*I play flute, guitar, piano, and piccolo. I also love singing, and just recently started learning to play the drums.
*I LOVE music and listen to all genres except death metal and rap.
*November Rain by Guns n' Roses is the my all time favorite song, and a close second is I Remember You by Skid Row.
*My family moved to Richmond, Kentucky 4 years ago. I was born in Dalton, Georgia and raised just across the state line in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
*I love to travel. Cool places I have been include Hawaii, Honduras, Belize, Canada (obviously!), Las Vegas, Hollywood, and approx. 38 of the 50 states. I still haven't been to Florida though :(
*I also enjoy running - I started running competitively in the 3rd grade and did my first 5K at the age of 10.
*My 3 favorite TV shows include Mad Men, The Walking Dead, and Big Bang Theory.

That's a little bit about me... I'm not sure what all this blog will consist of, but feel free to stop by anytime! You can also check out my personal blog at annamary1994.blogspot.com! :)

Have an excellent day!
